About

bolt

If you’ve ever had a community, chances are you talk to them in many places, Over time, you might end up with a fragmented community, with many people using multiple messaging apps. People eventually grow tired of the differences between apps, switching between them, and things become a mess.

how can I fix this??

Bridging! bolt lets you connect channels across platforms so people can choose what app they want to use, get the same messages, and are on the same page. It allows you to bridge as many channels as you like, so you can bring people wherever you'd like.

Getting started

1. Invite bolt

Using the links in the header, invite bolt to the server/space/channels you want it to bridge for you. Note that you may need to manually grant the bot permissions. Also ensure that bolt is able to send DMs (direct messages) to you, as that will ensure you keep your bridge codes secret.

2. Create the bridge on one platform

Choose a channel on one of the platforms you want to create a bridge in.

For example, if you wish to bridge a #general channel between three platforms, you should only create the bridge on one of the three platforms. You would join the bridge on the other two later.

Once you choose a channel, run the !bolt bridge create command in order to create a bridge. It should send you a DM with a bridge code. Take note of this, and keep it secret! Anyone who has a bridge code can join your bridge once.

If the bot does not DM you, or returns an error, try checking bolt's permissions, running !bolt bridge status, or reaching out for support with one of the support server links on the website.

3. Setup settings (optional)

Before you join the bridge on other platforms, make sure you change the settings you wish to have either enabled or disabled. You can use the toggle (!bolt bridge toggle <setting>) command to change the following settings, which are disabled by default.

  • allow_everyone (!bolt bridge toggle allow_everyone):
This setting determines whether mass-mentions (@everyone, @here, @room, etc.) get bridged as real mentions, or are turned into normal text.
  • add_platform_name (!bolt bridge toggle add_platform_name):
This setting determines whether to end a name with the platform it was originally sent from. For example, if a user named "Joey" sent a message on another platform, their name would show up as "Joey (Platform)" on other platforms. This may have some limitations depending platform username restrictions.

4. Join the channel elsewhere

Now that you've created a bridge, and have a join code, you can now join it
elsewhere.

For example, if you wish to bridge a #general channel between three platforms, and you chose to make it on Discord, you'd only join it on the other platforms. The create command automatically joins a channel to the bridge it makes.

Run !bolt bridge join <id>, replacing <id> with the bridge code from Step 2. It should send you a DM telling you that this was successful, and messages should start to bridge. If you wish to add another channel to this bridge, run !bolt bridge code to get another code to join with.

If the bot does not DM you, or returns an error, try checking bolt's permissions, running !bolt bridge status, or reaching out for support with one of the support server links on the website..
